A personal carbon monoxide detector saved some 250 students from gas poisoning at a dormitory in Philadelphia when its alarm went off early morning on Monday. The culinary students of the Art Institute of Philadelphia staying at the Center City building were evacuated to safety and examined at area hospitals. Firefighters who went to the scene measured very dangerous concentrations of carbon monoxide in the building's basement. The carbon monoxide level was found to be at 300 parts per million, according to reports. Further investigation traced the source of the poisonous gas to a restaurant's heater. Meanwhile, the institute put the evacuated student into hotels in the area.
