A 12-year-old New York City school girl was arrested earlier this month for doodling on her desk.
Alexa Gonzalez, who is described by her mother as a happy-go-lucky, loving child, was put in handcuffs and escorted to the police station across the street after school officials said she scribbled "Lex was here 2/1/10 … I love my friends Abby and Faith" on her desk at Junior High School 190.
Moraima Tamacho, the girl's mother, said Alexa was released a few hours later. David Cantor, spokesman for the education department, called the decision to arrest Alexa a lapse in good judgment, according to reports.
However, principal Marilyn Grant reportedly is standing by her decision to have the girl arrested. Alexa was given eight hours of community service and assigned a book report and essay on her experience and what she learned from it.
