Chess was invented in the East, probably by the Hindus in India. In the 6th Century it was introduced to Persia.
But the game of the Hindus and Persians was not the same as modern chess. The Hindus played a four-handed game with four toy armies—elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers. This game was known as chaturanga and probably involved the use of dice.
Modern chess, with a chequered board, did not evolve until the 16th Century. Spain and Italy were the first countries to take it up, followed by France and England. The first world chess champion was a Frenchman called Philidor.
