Walrus is subdivided into three subspecies: the Atlantic walrus (O. rosmarus rosmarus) which lives in the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific walrus (O. rosmarus divergens) which lives in the Pacific Ocean, and O. rosmarus laptevi, which lives in the Laptev Sea.
Walrus is a large seal which has huge tusks formed from the upper canine teeth. The tusks may reach a length of 70 cm (28 in), and are used for digging shellfish out of the seabed.
Walruses live in herds consisting of cows, calves and young bulls. Outside the breeding season, the old bulls live in separate groups. A walrus may weigh up to a ton.
