Dwight David Eisenhower (1890 – 1969), was an American soldier and statesman.

During the Second World War he was commander of the Allied forces in North Africa and Italy (1942 – 1943).

In 1943 he was appointed supreme commander of all the Allied forces in Europe and helped to plan the invasion of Normandy in June 1944.

After the war he became military commander of NATO. Enjoying great popularity, he was elected President of the USA in 1952, being re-elected in 1956.

During his presidency relations with the then USSR improved, and troops were used in the USA to bring about racial integration in schools.
