Did Unicorns Ever Exist? The unicorn is a mythical animal that never existed, although many people once believed that it did. These animals were believed to be much like horses except that a unicorn had a tail like a lion’s, and on its forehead was a single twisted horn.
The horn was supposed to have the magic power to detect poison and was much sought after for drinking cups in the Middle Ages. Legends vary on exactly what powers the unicorn held. Some say it could fly, others said that unicorns were immortal.
Possibly, the unicorn was a confused blend of several animals, garbled together in the tales told by early travelers—tales which probably described rhinoceroses and other long-horned animals.
