When Were Jellybeans Invented?
The National Confectioners Association of the United States says the jellybean is a descendant of “Turkish delight,” a fruit jelly candy that’s been popular since Biblical times.
The sugar coating comes from a process called “panning,” which was invented in France in the 17th century and used to sugar-coat almonds.
In the mid-1800s, an unknown American candy maker combined the two confection ideas and created jellybeans.
Jellybeans may have made their first appearance in the United States in 1861, when Boston confectioner William Schrafft encouraged customers to send his jellybeans to soldiers during the Civil War.
Historians believe jellybeans first became linked with the Christian holiday of Easter in the 1930s. The biggest jellybean-makers are the Maillard Corp. in New Bethlehem, PA., and Goelitz Confectionery in Oakland, California.
