University Expels Student over Gen Z Nurses Challenge

Madonna University expelled a final-year nursing student and suspended 14 of her classmates after a viral video surfaced from its university hospital in Elele, Rivers State, Nigeria.

The footage captured the students dancing in a waiting room, on a staircase, and on a bus as part of the “Gen Z nurses” challenge, humorously warning viewers in pidgin that the hospital now belongs to the new generation.

A fifteen-second clip shared on September 1 attracted over 1.7 million views on X by Saturday, according to Punch.

Chima Achu, the university’s communications director, confirmed the disciplinary actions to Premium Times.

Mercy, identified only as a level 500 student, faced expulsion, while the university suspended 14 others.

The National Association of Nigerian Students criticized the students’ conduct as inappropriate but urged the university to consider a more corrective approach instead of expulsion.

Additionally, the Nigerian Association of Nursing Students has initiated discussions to review the sanctions.

Madonna University plans to release its official stance on this incident on Monday, October 5, 2026.
