Was Columbus Trying to Prove the Earth Was round When He Discovered America?

Was Columbus Trying to Prove the Earth Was round When He Discovered America? No, it is not true that Christopher Columbus sailed into the unknown Atlantic Ocean in 1492 to prove the Earth was round. Educated people already knew that. Nor was he trying to discover a new world. Few people dreamed such a world existed, and Columbus died never knowing he had discovered the Americas, or the “New World.”

All he was trying to do on his famous voyage was reaching Asia by sailing westward. Columbus made three more voyages to the New World.

He always believed he had found the “Indies,’ as Asia was called, and he called the people there “Indians.”
