What is Pakistan? Why Pakistan is famous in the world? Pakistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is a country in South Asia, occupying the north-western corner of the Indian sub-continent. Capital, Islamabad; area about 881,913 square kilometres (340,509 square miles).

Pakistan was created an independent state in 1947 from the predominantly Muslim regions of the former Indian Empire. It consisted of two parts, West and East Pakistan, separated by 1450 km (900 miles) of India. The constitution was suspended in 1956 and in 1962 a presidential type of government came into force.

In 1971 the eastern province withdrew from the alliance and, after a bitter war involving India, became the independent state of Bangladesh. Pakistan left the Commonwealth of Nations in 1972 and in 1973, Pakistan adopted a new constitution which stipulated that all laws are to conform to the injunctions of Islam as laid down in the Quran and Sunnah. After a period of civilian rule the army assumed control of the country in 1978.

Pakistan has a varied landscape. There are mountains, plains, swamps and deserts, but it is predominantly a dry region. The River Indus which crosses the country is life-line providing water for the towns, irrigation for crops and also some hydro-electric power.

Pakistani food is similar to North Indian food. Pakistan has a great linguistic diversity. In the Chitral district of the country, people speak 13 different languages, which accounts for world’s greatest language diversity in areas of this size.

Pakistani People are of mixed descent, but there are several distinct groups. The largest is the Punjabi’s (60 per cent). Another important group is the Sindhi’s (13 per cent). Urdu is the official language but English is used in business and government.

Pakistan has deposits of natural gas, and some coal, iron ore and other minerals. Most of the people are occupied in farming and the main crops are wheat, cotton, maize, sugar cane and rice. There are some industries including textiles, food processing and chemicals.

Pakistan is famous for producing footballs and they are a respectable cricket playing nation in the subcontinent. Pakistan invented reverse swing in the game of Cricket. Wasim Akram, Waqar Yunis, Imran Khan are the bowlers who entertained the world with the art of swing bowling. Pakistan is also famous for its incredibly talented squash champions, who are represented on every prominent D1 or D3 University/College in the US. They have a reputation for their sportsmanship.

Pakistan is known for its nuclear scientists, one of whom reportedly gave Iran it’s know-how re building a nuclear bomb. Pakistan also elected the first woman head of state of a Muslim majority country, Benazir Bhutto, who led the country from 1988 – 1990. Pakistan has tremendous potential in the field of music as well. Qawwali the devotional music of the Sufis is best sung by the singers of Pakistan. Even ghazal singers like Ghulam Ali and Attaullah Khan are very famous in the subcontinent.
