Do Apes and Primates like to Eat Meat?

do apes and primates like to eat meat

Yes, most primates and certain apes eat meat, but infrequently, if at all, and most likely to supplement their vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients requirements.

Apes That Eat Meat

Chimpanzees: Amongst all the big apes, chimps are most voracious. Adult males hunt in groups, hunting small monkeys, animals, and bushpigs as well.

Bonobos: Bonobos are known to hunt tiny mammals, such as infant duikers and monkeys.

Gibbons (Lesser Apes): Gibbons occasionally consume tiny birds and their eggs.

Orangutans and Gorillas: Orangutans and gorillas are primarily vegetarian. Orangutans, on the other hand, infrequently and opportunistically eat slow loris, small birds, or eggs, whereas gorillas primarily consume insects and plants.

Primates That Eat Meat

Callitrichids: The Callitrichids are small, squirrel-sized monkeys native to the Americas with solemn little faces. They consist of marmosets, tamarins, and lion tamarins. Callitrichids eat birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Squirrel monkeys, blue monkeys, and the Old World Cercopithecines (vervet monkeys, macaques, and mandrills): They all enjoy frogs and small reptiles as well.

Baboons: Baboons are omnivorous and diversified meat eaters who frequently engage in active hunting. Researchers have observed the olive baboon (Papio anubis) eating cichlids (fish), snakes, hares, six different types of antelope, and even domestic sheep and goats.

Capuchins: Capuchins, the Americas’ frowning, white-capped monkeys, eat a wide range of animals without prejudice. They prey on infant birds, squirrels, and coatis, as well as adult frogs and lizards.
