Who Commanded the Carthaginian Army?

who commanded the carthaginian army

Hannibal Barca (247-circa 182 BC) commanded the Carthaginian army in Spain. Hannibal is most famous for his daring invasion of Italy during the Second Punic War.

He initiated the Second Punic War by attacking Saguntum in 219 BC. With an army that included a number of elephants, he then crossed the Alps into Italy and defeated the Romans at Trasimene (217 BC) and Cannae (216 BC).

He engineered one of the greatest tactical masterpieces in military history, using a double envelopment maneuver to encircle and destroy a vastly superior Roman force. However, he was unable to capture Rome and eventually returned to Carthage to defend it against a Roman invasion. The Romans defeated him at Zama (202 BC), and he went into exile and later committed suicide to avoid falling into Roman hands.

Hannibal Barca is widely considered one of the greatest military tacticians and strategists in history, though historians often debate whether he is the absolute greatest. According to ancient accounts by Plutarch and Livy, when the Roman general Scipio Africanus asked Hannibal who the best general was, Hannibal named Alexander the Great first, Pyrrhus second, and placed himself third—though he noted he would have ranked himself first if he had defeated Scipio at the Battle of Zama. He ultimately lost the Second Punic War to Scipio Africanus at the Battle of Zama in 202 BCE.

Critics argue that a commander who loses the most critical conflict of his career cannot hold the top spot. While his battlefield tactics were unmatched, some historians note that he struggled with the grand strategy of conquering Rome itself, failing to follow up on his early victories with a direct siege of the city. Other military geniuses like Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Genghis Khan achieved vast imperial conquests that outlasted Hannibal’s campaign.
