What’s the oddest rain you’ve ever experienced? It probably wasn’t fish, frogs, or even mysterious goo—all examples of the bizarre things that have fallen from the sky.
We’ve all encountered strange weather from time to time, especially as climate change brings unpredictable patterns.
While most of us expect to see only rain, snow, or hail, you might be surprised to learn about the times when it literally rained fish, frogs, or even what looked like blood.
Here are five of the strangest things that have fallen from the sky!
Fish
Imagine waiting for a boat and instead a shower of fish descends upon you! This phenomenon, known as “lluvia de peces” in Mexico, occurs when waterspouts suck fish from the ocean, carry them inland, and drop them. In some areas, locals even gather up the fish, treating them as free food.
Frogs
Frogs have also embarked on unexpected journeys due to waterspouts. Ancient Greek philosopher Heraclides Lembus noted instances of frogs raining down so heavily that they filled houses and roads. A notable “frog storm” occurred in Serbia in 2005, where tiny frogs fell from the sky. Surprisingly, not every falling frog ends up dead; some hop away to safety.
Meat
On March 3, 1876, residents of Bath County, Kentucky, witnessed an astonishing event known as the Kentucky Meat Shower. Mary Crouch was making soap when she noticed chunks of meat raining down from a clear sky. Curious locals even tasted some pieces, concluding they were likely venison or mutton. The most accepted theory is that vultures regurgitated the meat, perhaps to lighten their loads.
Blood (or Was It?)
Imagine witnessing rain that resembles blood, turning buildings an eerie red. In 2001, residents of Kerala, India, and in Zamora, Spain, in 2014, experienced this unsettling sight. Scientists theorize that this “blood rain” occurs when algae caught in raindrops release red pigments due to stress.
Mysterious Goo
In August 1994, Oakville, Washington, police officer David Lacey encountered a strange rain while on patrol. Instead of water, the rain appeared gooey and jelly-like, failing to wash away with his wipers. After examining the substance up close, Lacey and several locals fell ill with flu-like symptoms.
Theories about the goo vary, suggesting it could be jellyfish parts or remnants from an airplane toilet, but both explanations remain unconfirmed.
The truth is often stranger than fiction, and these extraordinary phenomena surely challenge our expectations of what can fall from the sky!
