Dr Ajoy Roychoudhary, head of oral and maxillofacial surgery at New Delhi medical institute, said: “It was shocking to see” A little girl complaining of mouth pain was taken to the dentist – and found to have 202 TEETH.
The Indian youngster complained to her mum about severe pain and had swellings in her mouth. Her businesswoman mother, living in the Gurgaon area, took her daughter to the dentist to find out what the problem was.
X-rays showed that the youngster suffered from compound odontoma – a complex tumor composed of normal dental tissues that grew in an irregular way. The seven-year-old had to endure two hours of surgery to remove the extra gnashers.
Dr Ajoy Roychoudhary, head of oral and maxillofacial surgery at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, said: “It was shocking to see such a complex situation in the minor’s mouth.
“Normally we see a few abnormal teeth-like structures in such patients; 202 of them inside the mouth of a seven-year-old are shocking, and our prime task was to get rid of them.”
He said although the surgery was relatively simple, it required high precision as a single mistake could cause a jaw fracture – which could lead to permanent deformation. After surgery the girl, whose name has not been revealed, can now chew food and is feeling good.
According to a family relative, they are very happy with the successful surgery and pleased that the girl can go back to leading a normal life. A spokesperson for the family said: “The family has thanked AIIMS dental centre for this remarkable achievement.”
