A Mumbai-based woman surprised many after she came across a Class 6 textbook that included lessons on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Neural Networks, and Python programming. Her reaction to the changing school curriculum sparked a discussion on social media about how early children should be introduced to advanced technology.
Khushi Jeswani, the woman identified, shared a video on Instagram while she went through the textbook. It was hard to imagine that teachers would normally cover topics that would typically be taught in a higher grade or at a professional level to a class of students approximately 11-12 years old. She was amazed to see that educators normally teach subjects that are normally taught in higher classes or professional courses to 11-12-year-old students.
Jeswani highlighted some topics in the video, including Machine Learning with Python, data and visualization, neural networks, AI, and ethics and safety.
She shared a comparison of the curriculum with what many adults learned when they were the same age, saying that previous generations only learned basic computer concepts when they were in school. Many Internet users soon picked up this response and shared their experiences of changes in technology education.
Many users on social media responded positively to the addition of AI and programming to school education. They recommended that educators introduce coding and emerging technologies to children from a young age to help them develop problem-solving skills and prepare for the technology world.
The comments section filled with different perspectives as one user wrote, “Times have changed. Keep up or sell pakoda and momos.” Another mentioned that their child had begun studying AI as early as Class 1, and another user reported that their child, in Class 3, is already learning basic JavaScript.
Many spoke about their own experiences in computer education, recalling a time when schools had dedicated computer labs and teachers taught programming in languages like Fortran and COBOL.
The discussion also highlighted how rapidly technology education has evolved. Schools increasingly introduce subjects that once appeared only in specialized courses to younger students as they adapt their curricula to technological developments.
Users debated whether some of the more advanced topics would be suitable for sixth graders, but others felt that introducing them at this early age would provide students with a better understanding of AI and programming in the future.
