Do All Infants Have Birthmarks? Birthmarks are quite common in infants, although not everyone has one. For instance, up to 80% of neonates have vascular birthmarks known as “stork bites.” Dermal melanocytosis, formerly known as “Mongolian spots,” is a type of pigmented birth mark that affects nearly half of Hispanic babies and the majority of Asian and Black babies. These birth marks frequently disappear by toddlerhood.

One to three percent of neonates have moles at birth or in their first year of life. Infantile hemangiomas are benign growths that affect up to 5% of people. Additionally, 2 out of 10,000 babies are born with venous malformations, an uncommon tangle of veins in the skin.

Moles are elevated, black, squishy patches that can develop on nearly any body region. The materials that make them up can vary from one another. Some moles are solid knots of skin tissue, whereas others are composed of tissues from arteries. Sometimes moles have hair, while other times they don’t. Nearly all people have at least one mole, with an average of fourteen!

Many birthmarks disappear on their own within the first few years of life, and the majority of them is harmless and can be classified as either pigmented or vascular. Extra blood vessels near the skin’s surface are the cause of vascular birthmarks. Depending on your baby’s skin tone and the depth of the blood vessels, they can be pink, red, or bluish in hue. Usually brown, gray, bluish, or black, pigmented birthmarks are caused by the growth of additional pigment cells.

Don’t worry if your child has a birthmark. The majority of birthmarks are benign. However, have the birthmark examined by a dermatologist to ensure that it is not an indication of a skin condition and that it won’t expand and cause issues for your child.
