How Did the Raccoon Get His Name?
Captain John Smith, an English adventurer, coined the phrase in 1608 to describe the native people and their rarowcun skin garments. English colonists abbreviated and phonetically spelled the word “raccoon” in the 1700s.
The raccoon’s scientific name is Procyon lotor. Procyon is neo-Latin/Greek for “before-dog” or “dog-like,” whereas lotor means “washer.” This is an appropriate term for this animal due to its unusual behavior: washing its food.
Whereas the Powhatan (Algonquian) peoples of Virginia used the phrase to indicate the animal’s unique habit of feeling and rummaging through stuff with its very dexterous front paws.
Other cultures emphasized physical characteristics that were similar. For example, the Aztec word mapachitli means “one who takes everything in its hands,” and is the source of the contemporary Spanish word for raccoon, mapache.
Even though washing is important to every culture’s identity, raccoons do not wash their hands or food. They simply appear to do so.
Raccoons are thought to have the most acute sense of touch of any known mammal, with their paws having many nerve endings in comparison with the human hands. In one investigation, researchers discovered that soaking the skin improved neuron response.
Do Raccoons Wash their Food?
Raccoons are said to learn more about their food by soaking it in water before eating it.
There have been several suggestions as to why they do this, and many people really think that the raccoons are simply washing away the sand and grit from their meal before eating it.
However this is a flawed reasoning. Raccoons inhabit a variety of environments, including forested wetlands and coastal marshes. They can’t be getting very much sand or grit there!
Some scientists have also suggested that they wash because they don’t create enough saliva and are simply trying to wet the meal to make it more appealing. This hypothesis has also been disputed and shown to be inaccurate.
What they’re doing is what scientists called dousing.
When raccoons dunk their food in water to wash it, they are really making their paws more sensitive. Water improves tactile nerve response in their paws, allowing them to learn more about what they are grasping and consuming. This allows them to feel the texture of their food more and makes it easier to decide what they want or don’t want to put in their mouths.
Dousing adds sensory input and allows them to better understand the food item in their hands. Because the majority of their diet is made up of little items that are difficult to see in the dark, it aids them in understanding the form, size, and texture.
This is how they “see” their food and may determine what it is by placing it in the water rather than grabbing it with their paws and eating it immediately.
Raccoons, as nocturnal mammals, have spent much of their lives in darkness, relying on their other senses, particularly touch, to navigate their surroundings. Dousing has been the raccoon’s strategy of checking and appraising their food before consuming it.
