What Is the Lifespan of a Flea?

A flea might live a year and a half under ideal conditions. These conditions include the right temperature, food supply, and high humidity.

Generally speaking, though, an adult flea only lives for 2 or 3 months. Without a host for food, a flea’s life might be as short as a few days. But with ample food supply, the adult flea often lives up to 100 days.

An entire flea infestation can persist in a house for several months because cocooned pupae can stay dormant for up to a year. Eggs hatch in 1 to 10 days, and larvae survive 1 to 3 weeks feeding on organic debris before spinning cocoons. The most resilient stage; pre-emerged adults inside cocoons can stay dormant for weeks, months, or up to a year waiting for heat and vibrations from a host.

Adult fleas begin searching for food when they emerge from the pupal stage. Fleas thrive in indoor temperatures between 70°F and 85°F with high humidity, which speeds up hatching and development.

Without pets, fleas may bite humans as temporary hosts, but they cannot fully reproduce or sustain a long-term population without a primary animal host.

Grown adult fleas are less than 5 mm in length and don’t generally get noticed unless they land on you or your pet. They immediately begin feasting on blood, whether it be from humans or animals, and use their powerful legs to get from one host to another.

While fleas are noted for their jumping abilities and may look like they can fly, they remain stationary when they locate a suitable host.

However, without a host, most fleas die within a day or two. With regular access to blood, a flea infestation can become difficult to control. Female fleas instinctively lay eggs day after day, leading to more and more fleas in your home.

While this can be a nuisance, this doesn’t make the flea life cycle any less fascinating. This small organism maintains its species by feeding on other animals, playing only a small part in the grand circle of life.
