How Would You Describe the Cambrian Period?
Cambrian is a period in Earth’s history that may be identified via the study of rocks and fossil remains. This time is the first major division of the Paleozoic era, and the name Cambrian period originates from Cambria, the Latin and Roman name for Wales, where rocks from this period were first studied.
British geologist Adam Sedgwick, called the geological system in 1835 after analyzing rock layers in North Wales, where the specific strata were initially recognized and recorded. It is the first major period on the geologic time scale typified by plentiful complex animal fossils, before the well-known “Cambrian Explosion” of diversified life.
The Cambrian Explosion resulted in a sudden and rapid burst of development, with practically all major animal groupings first appearing in the fossil record. It transformed primitive life on Earth into a vast array of complex animals.
The emergence of sophisticated species like brachiopods, chordates, and arthropods, some of which evolved into early vertebrates, characterizes this surge in biodiversity.
The ‘explosive’ phase, during which creatures rapidly evolved, is estimated to have only lasted the first 20 million years of the period. There is debate on the nature and breadth of the Cambrian explosion, with some scientists arguing that key evolutionary breakthroughs occurred earlier, implying that the apparent explosion could be due in part to a paucity of preserved fossils from earlier life forms.
The Cambrian period began around 570 million years ago and lasted for approximately 70 million years. It was a time when all living things were still limited to the water, yet life was getting more varied. In addition to plants, animals with shells (but not backbones) became common.
