Arizona Girl Scouts Seek Cookie-selling Guinness Record
An Arizona Girl Scout council has filed for a Guinness World Record after selling $355,000 worth of cookies in a 24-hour period.
Officials with the Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pine Council said 600 troops banded together to take advantage of Super Bowl tourism and sold $355,000 worth of cookies from 3 p.m. Jan. 30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 31.
Heather Thornton, communications manager for the council, said Guinness does not currently have a record for cookie sales, but the record-keeping organization set the bar for the new record at $75,000 — a goal the group easily surpassed.
“We wanted to have a category special to cookie sales,” Thornton told ABC News. “They do have records for other goods sold, but not for cookies.”
Susan de-Queljoe, a senior associate at the council, said officials decided Super Bowl XLIX would be the perfect time to attempt the feat.
“We thought, how great would it be to do a big push on Super Bowl weekend to sell cookies?” de-Queljoe told the Arizona Republic. “I don’t think any Girl Scouts council across the country has done this.”
Thornton said the participating troops set up booths in areas expected to draw large crowds of Super Bowl tourists.
“Boothing is a major way for the girls to make sales,” Thornton said. “We worked with grocery stores and retailers. For Super Bowl weekend we focused on going to restaurants in the area, as well as Cityscape [in Phoenix’s downtown], which was hosting a Super Bowl event. We also had a huge car show in town.”
De-Queljoe said she expects the record, whether or not it is accepted by Guinness, to stand for some time — but she hopes other councils will try. “I think we’ll be hard to beat in the future,” she said.
