Little Girl Gets a Prosthetic Hand with a Design Inspired by the Film Frozen
A little girl born without most of her right hand has a magical-themed new one thanks to a school robotics class, who built her a prosthetic hand with a design inspired by the film Frozen.
A group of eighth-grade (equivalent to UK year 9) pupils from Deer Creek Intermediate School in Wisconsin made the hand from $20-worth of material as part of an initiative by the US science program, FIRST.
The pupils also worked with E-Nable, a global volunteer prosthetics program, who put them in touch with six-year-old Ariah from California.
The pupils customized the hand to keep it in line with Ariah’s favourite film, Frozen. It is blue and green, like Elsa’s snow queen dress, and the hand is decorated with printed snowflakes and the legend, “Queen Ariah”. The 3D-printed hand took two months to make, with the pupils spending part of their daily lunch hour working on the project.
The school was later able to video call Ariah and see how the hand functioned. Pupil Georgia Hancock told the Huffington Post: “It makes me want to make a hand for everyone in the world that needs one.”
